A remarkable evening of Ukrainian chamber music was held at the Nádor Terem hall in Budapest, showcasing the rich musical heritage of Ukraine. Organised at the invitation of the Ukrainian National Union in Hungary, the event saw the participation of a representative from the Embassy of Ukraine in Hungary.
The Ukrainian Embassy shared the event details on its official Facebook page, as reported by Ukrinform.
A Celebration of Ukrainian Composers
The evening’s programme featured the works of notable Ukrainian composers, whose music, although deserving of a place on international stages, remains relatively unknown to the broader public. The composers included Viktor Kosenko, Vasyl Barvinsky, Stanislav Lyudkevich, Bohdana Filts, and Roman Medenets, a contemporary Ukrainian artist living in Hungary.
The highlight of the evening was the performance by pianists Lyubov Savina and Natalia Hereta. Their virtuoso four-handed piano playing left the audience spellbound, particularly with their masterful rendition of Roman Medenets’ composition Ivan Kupala. The duo also used the composer’s own techniques to evoke the sound of the traditional Ukrainian bandura and tsymbals on the piano, adding a unique touch to the performance.
Special Performances and Notable Moments
One of the evening’s most memorable moments featured Ariadna Bartai, who comes from the esteemed lineage of Lesya Ukrainka and Mykhailo Dragomanov. Together with Natalia Hereta, she performed a section of Vasyl Barvinsky’s work on two pianos, using arrangements she had made herself.
Adding to the evening’s musical diversity, Victoria Rudnyk (vocals) and Roman Osechinsky (violin) contributed to the performance, further enriching the Ukrainian musical palette presented.
A Cultural Triumph
The Ukrainian Embassy expressed its heartfelt gratitude to all the musicians, praising them for creating a “true celebration of Ukrainian classical music” that filled the hall with inspiration, beauty, and pride in Ukrainian art.
As part of the evening’s events, Professor Fedor Shandor, the Ambassador of Ukraine to Hungary, invited the “Cultural Landing” from Ukraine to meet with students from Ukrainian-Hungarian schools in Budapest, emphasising the importance of cultural exchange.
Overall, the evening underscored the richness of Ukrainian chamber music and highlighted the ongoing cultural dialogue between Ukraine and Hungary. It also demonstrated the invaluable role of the Ukrainian diaspora in promoting Ukrainian art abroad, fostering a deeper appreciation of its musical heritage within the Hungarian cultural context.
