Timeless Bengali Classics Reimagined by a New Generation of Artists

Last Friday evening, a formerly vacant restaurant at 138 East, Gulshan-1, Dhaka, was transformed into a vibrant hub of Bengali music. With seating arranged for nearly 200 guests, the event offered a two-hour musical journey, presenting classic Bengali songs through the voices of emerging young artists.

The programme, titled “Tara Unplugged”, featured the singing group Moji and Company, led by Nandita and Shubhendu, alongside solo artist Animesh Roy. At times, Nandita and Shubhendu performed together, sometimes Animesh sang solo, and occasionally the trio performed in unison. Their repertoire included timeless favourites such as “Mayurkonthi”, “Darale Duare”, “Akash Eto Meghla”, “E Gane Projapoti”, “Nasek Nasek”, “Bhober Desh”, and “Lal Paharer Deshe”. Together, they also delivered soulful renditions of “Aha Ki Anondo” and “Kotoi Rong Dekhi Duniya”. Each performance was beautifully complemented by contemporary instrumental arrangements.

The event was notable not only for its vocalists but also for its young instrumentalists. Sarod performances were delivered by tenth-grade student Fuljhuri, who managed to perform despite juggling SSC exam preparations. Other musicians included Kamrul on flute, Rahin on saxophone, Antar on keyboard, Matis on guitar, and Sudipta on drums. Their skillful accompaniment added depth and modern flair to the traditional tunes.

According to Jannatul Ferdous Mun, the founder of “Tara”, the initiative aims to introduce Bengali musical heritage to a contemporary audience while providing a platform for promising young artists. Mun emphasised that the programme will gradually expand, with plans for two more concerts in December, offering further opportunities for emerging talent to present Bengali classics in innovative and engaging ways.
