Three supporters of Baul artiste Abul Sarkar were injured in a violent attack by members of the “Tawhidi Janata” movement, a group that claims to defend Islamic morality. The attack took place around 10:30 am on Sunday at the Manikganj Government Boys High School field, also known as Bijoy Mela field.
The victims—Baul Alim, Ariful, and Zahirul—are all from different parts of Manikganj, and have been hospitalized at Sadar Hospital with injuries. Abdullah Al Mamun, the additional superintendent of Manikganj police, confirmed the incident and stated that the attack was carried out by the Tawhidi Janata group, which has been known for targeting individuals they perceive as violating their interpretation of Islamic values.
The violent act comes in the wake of recent events involving the Baul artist Abul Sarkar. Sarkar, a well-known figure in the local Baul music scene, was detained by the Detective Branch (DB) of police on Thursday during a musical event in Gior Upazila. He was arrested over allegations of “insulting Islam and Allah” during a performance. Following his arrest, a court sent him to jail, intensifying tensions surrounding the incident.
Sarkar, who resides in the Partilli area of Saturia Upazila, is commonly referred to as “Choto Abul Sarkar” in his community. The attack on his supporters appears to be part of an ongoing conflict linked to his arrest and the controversy surrounding his music.
The incident has drawn attention to the rising tensions between conservative groups and individuals associated with popular cultural forms like Baul music, which is often seen as controversial due to its blending of spirituality and folk traditions. The local authorities are continuing their investigation into the attack, while the health condition of the injured remains a key concern.
