Melissa Carper and Theo Lawrence have teamed up to release The Way I Remember You, a nostalgic and heartwarming duet that showcases their clever and lighthearted take on early Americana music.
The song, penned by Melissa herself, was inspired during a 2023 tour with the Wonder Women of Country. “I was driving the van and thinking about how the way we remember a past lover can often become distorted over time,” she explains. “Sometimes, we find ourselves reminiscing about a particular moment in the relationship when everything felt perfect, as if the love was still new. It’s a bit of a nostalgic idealisation of the past.”
The duet takes on an added layer of depth when Theo Lawrence joins in with a verse that gives voice to the other side of the relationship. “His verse adds a whole new dimension to the song,” Melissa says. “Now, both characters are looking back on their shared memories – Theo’s character even reflects on an old photograph tucked into a book. Together, they sing, ‘That’s the way I remember you, back when it was true. For a moment in time nothing could be more fine.’”
Over the last few years, both Melissa and Theo have made their mark as respected figures in the roots music scene. The pair, one a country woman from Arkansas and the other a city man from Paris, have forged a unique musical partnership grounded in their shared passion for traditional American music, blending elements of country, jazz, and soul.
