Independent Music New Zealand (IMNZ), in collaboration with Recorded Music NZ, has unveiled the ten finalists for the 2026 Tate Music Prize, the nation’s most prestigious award recognising outstanding independent albums.
This year’s shortlist highlights the breadth and innovation of New Zealand’s independent music scene. Among the nominees are Auckland punk band Dick Move, dream-pop ensemble Phoebe Rings, post-punk outfit Ringlets, and celebrated singer-songwriters Marlon Williams and Reb Fountain. Notably, all ten albums featured prominently in Rolling Stone AU/NZ’s 2025 ranking of New Zealand’s best albums.
The finalists were selected from albums released within the past year, reflecting both artistic vision and cultural significance. The winner will receive a cash prize of NZ$12,500, funded by Recorded Music NZ.
Celebrating 17 Years of Musical Excellence
Marking its 17th year, the Tate Music Prize honours albums “of depth, creative vision, and artistic integrity that contribute meaningfully to New Zealand’s cultural landscape.” In a first for the award, the 2026 ceremony will be held at the New Zealand International Convention Centre (NZICC) and will be open to the public, allowing the wider community to celebrate the nation’s musical talent.
Dylan Pellett, General Manager of IMNZ, commented:
“Every year, astonishing albums are produced across Aotearoa. Celebrating these ten works in a community-inclusive event is truly extraordinary.”
Alongside the main prize, the 2026 ceremony will present three additional awards:
Auckland Live Best Independent Debut Award
NZ On Air Outstanding Music Journalism Award
IMNZ Classic Record Award
Nominees for these categories will be announced prior to the ceremony. Last year’s main award was claimed by MOKOTRON for WAEREA, which had reached number two on the 2024 list of New Zealand’s best albums.
