Selena Gomez Reflects on Her Evolving Singing Voice

Selena Gomez has candidly opened up about why her voice has evolved over the years, offering fans an intimate glimpse into the challenges she has faced as a performer. During an Instagram Live session on Tuesday, the singer addressed a fan’s question regarding her vocals. “So sometimes when I’m on—never mind,” she began, according to E! News. She continued, “There’s no excuse, I don’t really care. I think my point is, is that sometimes things happen. I get weird. My throat kind of swells inside sometimes. That’s all.”

Gomez was quick to reassure viewers that she was not offended by the query, adding warmly, “I’m glad y’all are being real with me on the Live. I appreciate it though, for real.” The brief exchange underscores her broader journey as an artist navigating life and music under the relentless scrutiny of the public eye.

From her early days releasing 2008’s “Cruella de Vil” to her most recent album, I Said I Love You First, co-created with her husband Benny Blanco, Gomez has experienced both artistic growth and personal challenges. She has long been open about her ongoing battle with lupus, a chronic autoimmune condition that can trigger inflammation throughout the body, including the throat. Gomez first disclosed her diagnosis in a 2015 Billboard interview, revealing, “I was diagnosed with lupus, and I’ve been through chemotherapy…I locked myself away until I was confident and comfortable again.”

She has also reflected on how lupus treatments contributed to weight fluctuations and public scrutiny. In a 2023 appearance on Apple TV’s Dear…, she explained, “My weight would constantly fluctuate because I would be on certain medications. And obviously, people just ran with it…It was like they couldn’t wait to find a thing to bring me down. I was being shamed for gaining weight because of my lupus.”

Throughout her career, Gomez has consistently emphasised the importance of controlling her own narrative. Speaking to NPR in 2020, she said, “The reason why I’ve become so vocal about the trials and tribulations of my life is because people were already going to narrate that for me…Most of the time, yes, it’s not true, or it’s an embellished version of what the truth is. I want to be able to tell my story the way that I want to tell it.”

This transparency has become a defining feature of Gomez’s public persona, allowing her to connect with fans authentically while navigating the complexities of health, fame, and artistry.
