Veteran Indian playback singer Asha Bhosle has died in Mumbai at the age of 92, marking the end of a significant chapter in Indian music history. Her death has prompted widespread mourning across the music and film industries.
According to hospital sources, Asha Bhosle passed away on Sunday at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital, where she had been admitted after falling ill the previous night. Medical professionals stated that she had been suffering from age-related complications along with infection. Her condition deteriorated due to multiple organ failure, which ultimately led to her death.
Following her passing, her mortal remains were taken to her residence in Lower Parel on Sunday evening. In accordance with the family’s arrangements, her body was kept at the residence from the morning hours for the public and admirers to pay their last respects. Her son, Anand Bhosle, stated that those wishing to offer condolences could visit the residence from 11:00 a.m.
The family confirmed that the final viewing would take place between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., after which the last rites would be performed at 4:00 p.m. on Monday at Shivaji Park in Mumbai with full state honours. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is expected to attend the ceremony. The same cremation ground had previously been used for the last rites of her elder sister, Lata Mangeshkar.
Asha Bhosle’s career spanned more than seven decades, during which she recorded over 12,000 songs. She sang in more than 20 languages, contributing to a wide range of musical genres including classical, ghazals, and contemporary film music. Her versatility made her one of the most recorded vocalists in Indian music history.
She received several honours during her lifetime, including the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the Padma Vibhushan, and multiple National Film Awards. These recognitions reflected her long-standing contribution to Indian cinema and music.
