Ibrahim Ahmed Kamal, the veteran guitarist and founding member of Bangladesh’s iconic rock band Warfaze, has reflected on more than four decades devoted to music, describing the journey as the single greatest accomplishment of his life. In a recent, deeply personal social media post, Kamal offered a rare, chronological glimpse into the milestones, sacrifices and quiet triumphs that have shaped his career and, by extension, the evolution of Bangladeshi rock music.
Looking back, Kamal described the years from 1984 to 2026 as feeling “like a dream”. That dream began taking shape in November 1983, when he purchased his first guitar—an event that would alter the course of his life. Formal learning followed in 1984, and by 1986 he had stepped onto a public stage for the first time. That same year, he earned his first income from music, a modest but symbolic validation of his chosen path.
By 1987, Kamal had established himself as a regular presence on the live music circuit. He was performing consistently with bands, recording in professional studios, appearing on Bangladesh Television and collaborating with a wide range of artists. These formative experiences culminated in 1988, when Warfaze began its ascent. The band’s self-titled debut album, released in 1991, is widely regarded as a landmark in the country’s rock history and remains one of the defining achievements of Kamal’s life.
He has consistently acknowledged the role of his parents, whose support and trust allowed him to pursue music without the pressure of conventional employment. That freedom, however, came with its own challenges. Balancing academic responsibilities, family life, business commitments, extensive travel and a demanding musical career was rarely straightforward. Yet Kamal believes that the community he built—friends, bandmates and fellow musicians—provided both emotional sustenance and creative energy, shaping his identity as an artist.
The guitarist also spoke candidly about a painful chapter in recent years. The death of his father in 2024 plunged him into a period of severe depression. Although he has since returned to music, he acknowledges that physical limitations no longer permit the relentless pace he once maintained. Instead, he now approaches his craft with greater deliberation, depth and restraint.
Reflecting on his lifestyle, Kamal remarked that his greatest form of “insurance” was a life free from routine employment. This allowed him to spend decades creating music, travelling across Bangladesh and abroad, and nurturing friendships that span 40 to 50 years. He considers the enduring body of work produced by Warfaze to be the finest outcome of those lifelong bonds.
Looking ahead, Kamal remains cautiously optimistic. Once visa-related complications are resolved, he hopes Warfaze will return to international touring. How far the band can go in the coming years, he says, remains an open and intriguing question.
