Jennifer Lopez Reveals Struggle After Third Divorce

Jennifer Lopez has opened up about the profound emotional challenges she faced following her 2014 divorce from Marc Anthony, describing the period as a time when she was “about to give up on it all.”

Speaking during her Up All Night Las Vegas residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace on Friday, 6 March, the 56-year-old singer reflected on the months after her split from her third husband, calling it “actually a really tough time.”

“I was really about to give up on it all,” Lopez said, speaking into the microphone as videos circulated widely on social media. “I mean, I was a single mother with two three-year-old twins.” Lopez shares 18-year-old twins, Max and Emme, with Anthony, 57.

Amid these struggles, Lopez found guidance from one of her mentors, the late author Louise Hay, who offered advice that continues to influence her today.

“She said to me, ‘Jennifer, you’re a dancer, right?’” Lopez recalled. “I said, ‘Yes, I am.’ And she said, ‘When you’re learning a dance and you get the steps wrong, what do you do?’ I said, ‘I just keep going until I get the steps right.’ And she said, ‘That’s right Jennifer. Always keep dancing.’”

Lopez extended this philosophy to her audience, urging them to persist through life’s challenges. “I wish the same for each and every one of you, that no matter what life throws at you, you dance and you dance and you dance. Again and again and again,” she said, pointing to the crowd.

Lopez has previously reflected on her personal growth during this period. During the second night of her residency in December, she noted that she “really started getting good at [dancing]” after her third divorce, at a time when “her life was a mess.”

Despite the emotional strain of her separation from Anthony, Lopez has acknowledged the positive influence he had on her confidence. In a 2018 interview with Sunday Today, she stated that during their seven-year marriage, Anthony continually reminded her, “You’re a great singer. Don’t ever let anybody tell you you’re not a great singer,” reinforcing her self-belief.

Years later, collaborating with Anthony on her Spanish-language album Por Primera Vez helped repair their relationship. Speaking on Spotify’s ¡Viva Latino! podcast in November 2017, Lopez explained, “It actually repaired certain parts of our relationship that had been fractured from our marriage and our divorce, and it made us friends again.”
