This February, the Geelong Botanic Gardens will be transformed into a vibrant hub of music and culture as the much-anticipated summer jazz series returns. The series promises three outdoor, family-friendly concerts, celebrating jazz, swing, and big band music against the backdrop of one of Geelong’s most picturesque green spaces.
The series opens on 14 February with Melbourne jazz veterans The Pearly Shells, a seven-piece ensemble famed for their lively stage presence and infectious, dance-oriented sound. Formed thirty years ago in Melbourne, The Pearly Shells have collaborated with some of the most prominent figures in Australian jazz and frequently invite the scene’s leading vocalists to join them on stage.
Speaking about the upcoming performance, bandleader and bassist Steve Purcell said:
“We’re bringing the Hot Seven, which is our usual rhythm section with three horn players. It’s not quite a full big band, but with all those horns, we’ll create a big, dynamic sound. Once you’ve got three or four horns, people really pay attention—it’s powerful, energetic, and impossible to ignore.”
The series continues with the Surf Coast Big Band on 22 February, renowned for their swinging arrangements and big band style, followed by Bob Sedergreen & Friends on 28 February, led by the celebrated jazz pianist and educator. Each concert is designed to provide a relaxed, outdoor experience suitable for all ages, making it an ideal cultural outing for families and music lovers alike.
For those planning to attend, the series promises more than just music. The Gardens’ lush, landscaped surroundings provide the perfect setting for a picnic, while light refreshments and seating will be available on-site. Visitors are encouraged to bring rugs, chairs, and a sense of rhythm to fully enjoy the performances.
