Jennifer Jimenez, Director of Bands at South Miami Senior High School, has been named the 2026 recipient of the prestigious Music Educator Award, a distinction presented in partnership with the The Recording Academy. Selected from more than 2,000 nominations submitted across all 50 American states, Jimenez emerged as the winner from a shortlist of ten national finalists following a rigorous, months-long adjudication process.
The Music Educator Award recognises teachers who have made a lasting contribution to the field of music education and who demonstrate measurable impact on students and their communities. In receiving the honour, Jimenez said she felt “deeply humbled to represent music educators across the country who work tirelessly every day,” adding that the award shines a welcome spotlight on the achievements of her school community.
Now in her 19th year at South Miami Senior High, Jimenez has built a reputation for academic rigour, artistic excellence and a pastoral approach that extends well beyond the rehearsal room. Her educational philosophy centres on discipline, resilience and teamwork—qualities she believes are cultivated naturally through ensemble performance. Former pupils frequently attest that the confidence and leadership skills they developed under her guidance proved invaluable in higher education and professional life.
Under her stewardship, the school’s Cobra Band programme has flourished. Students have performed at the world-renowned Carnegie Hall and appeared at two editions of the Super Bowl—milestones that underscore the ensemble’s national profile. Such achievements are rare for a public secondary school band and reflect years of sustained commitment from both staff and pupils.
As part of the award, Jimenez received a personal honorarium of $10,000, alongside a matching $10,000 institutional grant to strengthen the school’s music programme. The funds are expected to support instrument acquisition, masterclasses, travel for competitions and expanded performance opportunities.
Her accolades extend beyond this latest triumph. Jimenez is a past recipient of the Kennedy Center’s Sondheim Inspirational Teacher Award and was previously named a finalist for the same Grammy distinction she has now secured.
Notably, the wider Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) community was strongly represented in the competition, with five educators reaching the quarter-final stage.
