Renowned Bangladeshi singer Dolly Sayantani, once a household name in the country’s music industry, is currently based in Canada. Despite living overseas, she remains actively involved in music, lending her voice to new recordings and maintaining a vibrant connection with her fans. Recently, she shared insights about her current life and ongoing projects in an interview with the entertainment section of Hello.
Dolly’s career began early: her first album, He Jubok, was released while she was still in class nine and became an instant hit. Since then, she has explored both modern and folk music genres, amassing a total of 15 solo albums.
“I often perform shows here in Canada,” Dolly explained. “When I first came, I didn’t imagine I would stay long. Once I realised I would be here for an extended period, I brought my harmonium and music notebooks from Bangladesh. I make sure to keep my musical routine regular.”
She emphasised that distance has not slowed her productivity:
“Being in Canada doesn’t mean I’ve stopped recording. I have a studio near my home, from where I record songs and send them back to Bangladesh. In this way, I continue my musical work and remain connected to my country.”
Regarding audience reception abroad, Dolly expressed delight:
“I’ve performed many shows in Canada before, and it’s always enjoyable. Unlike at home, here if I sing the opening line, the audience often continues the rest along with the music. It’s a uniquely rewarding experience.”
The singer is also embracing the current trend of reimagining classic hits. Plans are underway to rearrange her popular songs, beginning with He Jubok. She confirmed:
“Several companies approached me earlier, but I hesitated, worrying if the new arrangements could live up to the fond memories fans have of the originals. Seeing others succeed, I’ve now decided to join the trend and will gradually rework all my hit songs.”
Dolly has also launched a YouTube channel, primarily to release her daughters’ music. With over 100,000 subscribers already, she hopes to expand content regularly, though she is seeking technical support to manage the channel efficiently.
Her daughters—Kotha, Rimjhim, and Faiza—share her musical passion, but school commitments often delay new releases. Dolly noted that she is staying in Canada to support them during this transition, as their father’s business commitments limit his availability.
