The Government of Bangladesh has decided to confer the Posthumous Independence Award 2026 upon legendary singer Bashir Ahmed, in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to the country’s music and film industry.
The announcement was confirmed in a press release issued by the Cabinet Division on Thursday, 5 March. The release stated that a total of 15 distinguished individuals and 5 institutions have been nominated for this prestigious national honour this year. Bashir Ahmed is listed eighth among the nominated individuals.

Born in 1939 in Kolkata, Bashir Ahmed emerged as one of the brightest stars in the South Asian music scene. By the 1960s, he had gained immense popularity through his performances in both Bengali and Urdu films. His musical education under the legendary maestros Ustad Belayet Hossain and Ustad Baro Ghulam Ali Khan greatly enriched his artistry and technical mastery.
