DHAKA – The Chief Adviser’s Press Wing has issued a clarification regarding the government’s decision to cancel plans to appoint physical education (PE) and music teachers in government primary schools.
Earlier, the government had approved the recruitment of an equal number of PE and music teachers across 2,500 school clusters. However, the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education has now abandoned the proposal following recommendations from a secretary-level committee.
According to the statement, the committee found the original project design to be flawed. It concluded that appointing such a limited number of teachers would fail to deliver effective benefits to the primary education system and could lead to inequality among schools.
Bangladesh has 65,569 primary schools nationwide, and most institutions would not be included in the scheme. Under the cluster-based model, one teacher would be required to serve more than 20 schools at once, which the committee deemed unfeasible.
The statement further explained that, subject to funding availability, positions for PE and music teachers could be created in all primary schools in the future, with recruitment conducted on a broader scale.
