Veteran rock musician Babna Karim is set to return to the cinematic spotlight, taking full creative charge of the theme song for the forthcoming film Robi in Dhaka, directed by Rajib Salehin. In a rare and comprehensive involvement, Karim has composed, written, arranged and performed the track himself—an artistic commitment that has stirred considerable anticipation within the country’s music circles.
According to the director, Karim recently visited Bangladesh and presented the initial composition in person. Minor refinements to the lyrics are currently under way, with final recording sessions expected shortly. Salehin noted that the song has been crafted to mirror the emotional turbulence and psychological tension experienced by the film’s central characters. He added that the thematic undercurrents are designed to resonate particularly with younger audiences, reflecting their uncertainties, aspirations and inner conflicts.
Karim’s reappearance in a film project coincides with a significant milestone for Warfaze, the iconic rock band with which he has long been associated. The group is being honoured this year with the prestigious Ekushey Padak, one of the nation’s highest civilian awards. Karim travelled to Bangladesh to attend the award ceremony, marking a notable homecoming for the engineer-turned-musician who has lived in the United States for nearly three decades. Despite his professional commitments abroad, he has remained deeply connected to music, maintaining a distinctive compositional style and vocal presence that have earned enduring admiration.
Last year, Karim reintroduced himself to a new generation of listeners through a reimagined rendition of “Obak Bhalobasha” on Coke Studio Bangla. The release garnered widespread acclaim, demonstrating that the passage of time has done little to diminish his appeal.
The film’s lead role is portrayed by Imtiaz Barshan, supported by Richy Solaiman, Azad Abul Kalam, and Arman Parvez Murad. Production has concluded, and the project is presently in post-production editing. The narrative centres on the disillusionment, confusion and self-exploration of Generation Z, set against the stark realities of urban life.
