In recognition of significant contributions across diverse fields, the Government of Bangladesh has announced the recipients of the 2026 Ekushey Padak, the nation’s highest civilian award. This year, nine distinguished individuals and one institution have been selected. Among the institutional honourees is the country’s iconic rock band, Warfaze.
The announcement reached Warfaze while the band was in the midst of preparing for a concert, instantly filling its members with pride and elation. Speaking to Prothom Alo, the band’s leader Sheikh Monirul Alam Tipu said, “We were rehearsing for a performance when this news came. Hearing it, we were overwhelmed. It is an emotion that words cannot adequately convey. Perhaps we are the first band in the country to receive this prestigious national honour.”
Tipu dedicated the award to every individual who has been part of Warfaze’s journey. “From founding members to those working behind the scenes, this recognition belongs to everyone. The support and sacrifices of our families have been invaluable in shaping the band we are today. We also express our heartfelt gratitude to our fans and the media; without them, our achievements would hold little meaning,” he added.
The 2026 Ekushey Padak list also features notable figures from the country’s cultural sphere. The late musician Ayub Bachchu, a pioneer of Bangladeshi rock, and celebrated actress Farida Akhter Bobita have been honoured for their lifelong contributions. In the performing arts, Islam Uddin Palakar will be recognised for theatre, and Arthi Ahmed for dance.
The official announcement was made on Thursday, 5 February, during a briefing at the Foreign Service Academy Auditorium in Dhaka by Shafiqul Alam, Press Secretary to the Principal Adviser.
A summary of the 2026 Ekushey Padak recipients in the cultural sector is as follows:
