Amyl & The Sniffers cover $35,000 bar bill after last-minute cancellation of free Melbourne gig

Australian punk outfit Amyl & The Sniffers turned disappointment into celebration last weekend after their highly anticipated free gig in Melbourne was cancelled at the last moment. Instead of allowing the night to end on a sour note, the band surprised fans by opening $35,000 worth of bar tabs across seven pubs throughout the city.

The event was scheduled for Friday, 14 November, at Melbourne’s iconic Fed Square, where thousands had gathered following weeks of promotion. The atmosphere was electric, with eager fans lining up early in hopes of experiencing the raw, high-energy performance the band is known for. However, just minutes before the group were due to step onstage, organisers announced that the show had to be cancelled due to a serious safety concern: part of the front-row barrier had collapsed, leading to a surge of fans breaching the barricade.

With crowd safety at risk, the organisers made the difficult decision to shut down the event immediately. Understandably, fans were heartbroken, many of whom had travelled across the city to attend the free show. Sensing the frustration, the band took to social media to apologise and inform fans that they had opened seven bar tabs of $5,000 each at pubs around Melbourne.

Frontwoman Amy Taylor addressed fans in a video message, saying:
“Have a drink on us, in proper AC/DC fashion. Just go out and have fun tonight.”

Within a few hours, the band posted an update confirming that the tabs had been completely spent—proof that thousands of disappointed fans had successfully turned the night into an impromptu city-wide party.

According to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, the initiative not only lifted fans’ spirits but also brought a significant spike in business to the local pubs. Benjamin “Rusty” Russell of The Curtin told reporters:
“It was absolutely wild. This is what Melbourne’s music community is all about. The band cut their teeth in venues like ours, so seeing them give back on this scale is genuinely heartwarming.”

A manager from another pub added:
“We have never felt so much love. This band played here when they were just starting out, and what they’ve done tonight is incredible—for us, for the community, and for local live music.”

Beyond this unexpected act of generosity, the band has a busy schedule ahead. Amyl & The Sniffers are set to join Deftones at Outbreak Fest 2026, as well as The Cure at Øya Festival. Their recent performance at Reading 2025 received a glowing four-star review, praised for its unstoppable punk energy and the band’s ability to turn chaos into pure joy.
