Album Review: Untamed Silence – The Great Majority

Fresh off their successful support slots with Saxon and U.D.O., Northern rockers Untamed Silence are making waves in the rock scene, and their latest album, The Great Majority, provides all the proof you need to understand why.

Blending raw rock elements, catchy hooks, and just the right amount of magic, this quartet has earned the respect of metal legend Biff Byford, who personally invited them to open for Saxon. While their sound is more melodic than the bruising approach of the Barnsley titans, Untamed Silence still packs plenty of muscle. What truly sets the band apart, however, is the exceptional quality of their songwriting and the standout performances, particularly from vocalist Debbie Wade.

Where The Great Majority really excels is in the band’s ability to inject surprising twists into the mix. Subtle touches throughout the album elevate it from the ordinary, offering a rich listening experience that reveals new layers with every spin. Tracks like Long Time Dead and The Game could easily fill radio airwaves and rock arenas, but even at their loudest, there’s always something unexpected lurking beneath the surface. The opener Nowhere is a prime example – it starts with a stately build-up, only to explode into an energetic rush that’s anything but predictable.

Guitarist David Jones adds another dimension to the band’s sound, delivering razor-sharp riffs and subtle, intricate flourishes that provide a sharp contrast to the heavier moments. Drummer Ryan Wayne Smith and bassist Nigel W Bennion also deserve credit for their performances, with their tight rhythm section giving the album a dynamic, Led Zeppelin-inspired energy, especially on tracks like Rise, which is brimming with power and groove.

Untamed Silence are never afraid to experiment. From the almost prog rock elements on Monster to the haunting ballad Disintegrate, this album defies simple genre categorisation. The trio of tracks – Hardship, The Power, and Deadspeak – all show the band’s ability to churn out high-octane rock anthems, guaranteed to get you dancing and playing air guitar around the living room.

Among the standout tracks, Disintegrate is a particularly emotional high point, while Roses hits hard with raw energy. Both songs have the kind of intensity that could bring a stone angel to tears.

Whether Untamed Silence follow in the footsteps of their mentor Biff Byford and go on to headline massive stages is yet to be seen. For now, though, The Great Majority is a must-listen, an album that demands and deserves every bit of attention it gets.
