A.R. Rahman Speaks on Muslim Marginalisation In Bollywood

Renowned Indian composer and music director A.R. Rahman, whose contributions have enriched Indian and international cinema for over three decades, has recently spoken candidly about his professional experiences in Bollywood. Often referred to as the “Mozart of Madras,” Rahman has received numerous national and international accolades, including two Academy Awards. Despite this illustrious career, he disclosed that opportunities in Hindi cinema have significantly diminished for him over the past eight years.

According to Rahman, two primary factors have contributed to this decline. Firstly, he attributed it to changes in Bollywood’s power structures and decision-making processes. He observed that many projects are now influenced by “irrelevant or unqualified individuals,” who exert disproportionate control over production choices. Secondly, Rahman hinted that religious bias may also play a role. While he clarified that no direct discrimination has occurred, he acknowledged persistent “whispered allegations” within the industry regarding preferential treatment based on religion. In a recent interview, he stated:

“Since the change in leadership, opportunities have become limited. Many decision-makers are not creative. Religious bias can also play a role—no one admits it openly, but the whispers exist.”

Industry analysts have long noted that Rahman’s work has been more prominent in South Indian cinema than in Bollywood, a point he openly confirmed. His statements have sparked heated debates across political and cultural arenas. Opposition parties have interpreted his remarks as a critique of the central government, although the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has denied any institutional bias.

Central Minister Ramdas Athawale refuted Rahman’s claims, highlighting that numerous Muslim actors, including Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, and Aamir Khan, remain active and internationally recognised within Hindi cinema. Meanwhile, Syed Basha, a senior BJP minority leader, maintained that Rahman has never been overlooked during party-led governance.
