Dhaka is set to witness a significant cultural gathering as the esteemed organisation, ‘Amra Shurjomukhi’, prepares to celebrate its 50th founding anniversary. Since its establishment on 30 November 1975, the organisation has been a pillar of the country’s arts scene. The momentous Golden Jubilee celebration includes a highly anticipated musical event scheduled for this evening (29 November 2025) at the Nilima Ibrahim Auditorium of the Mohila Samity on Bailey Road. The evening’s main attraction will be a special live performance by the renowned independent folk-fusion ensemble, ‘Joler Gaan’.
The celebration underscores the organisation’s lasting commitment to promoting and nurturing local talent. The programme will feature veteran singer and music luminary, Syed Abdul Hadi, as the Chief Guest, whose presence adds considerable prestige. He is set to share invaluable insights from his illustrious journey in the world of music. Furthermore, the audience will hear from distinguished Special Guests, the Ekushey Padak recipients Shaheen Samad and Fatema-tuz-Zohra, both of whom are icons in the Bangladeshi music industry. The proceedings will officially commence with an introductory address by the current Executive Director of ‘Amra Shurjomukhi’, Shafiqul Islam Selim.
Rana Sarwar, the Manager and Guitarist for ‘Joler Gaan’, spoke about the privilege of participating in such a historic event. “It feels wonderful to be with ‘Amra Shurjomukhi’ as they commemorate 50 years of contribution to culture. Our approach to performances is always spontaneous; we do not finalise the setlist beforehand. We make a conscious effort to perform songs preferred by the audience on the spot, and we will follow the same tradition tonight. We have great confidence that the audience will thoroughly enjoy our set.”
‘Joler Gaan’, meaning ‘Song of Water’, has charmed audiences for approximately two decades with its unique blend of traditional folk and contemporary sounds. Although the band’s founder, Rahul Ananda, has been abroad for over one year, the creative operations of ‘Joler Gaan’ have not stalled. The remaining band members, or ‘bandmates’, have successfully continued their performances and recordings. The band is currently being led by founding member Konok Aditya in Ananda’s absence. This event is not just a concert; it is a tribute to 50 years of cultural excellence and a celebration of the vibrant folk music that ‘Joler Gaan’ embodies.
