Miles Founder Hamin Ahmed Joins Asia-Pacific Music Leadership

Veteran Bangladeshi musician Hamin Ahmed, a founding member of the celebrated rock band Miles, has been elected to the executive committee of the Asia-Pacific Music Creators Alliance (APMA), marking a significant milestone for Bangladesh’s music industry.

His appointment to the international organisation represents a new opportunity for Bangladeshi songwriters, composers and performers to engage with their counterparts across the Asia-Pacific region. It also strengthens the country’s representation in discussions concerning music creators’ rights, intellectual property protection and international collaboration.

Expressing his satisfaction with the achievement, Ahmed described the appointment as a moment of pride for Bangladesh’s music community.

“This achievement is undoubtedly a source of great joy for Bangladesh’s music industry. The recognition I have received through this election is also a first for Bangladesh,” he said.

“Bangladeshi music creators will now be able to participate in various activities across the Asia-Pacific region. The exchange of information and international cooperation will certainly have a positive impact on our music industry.”

The newly formed APMA executive committee comprises 11 members, with representatives from Bangladesh, Australia, China, Thailand, South Korea, Japan and India.

The regional alliance maintains direct connections with the International Council of Music Creators (CIAM) and the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers (CISAC), organisations involved in promoting creators’ rights and supporting the management of intellectual property.

APMA was formally established in November 2016 during the World Creators Forum in Beijing, China. Since its inception, the alliance has provided a regional platform for music creators to exchange experiences, strengthen professional relationships and address issues affecting their creative work.

The organisation’s activities are particularly relevant at a time when digital distribution and changing music consumption patterns have brought fresh attention to copyright protection, royalty collection and fair remuneration for composers and songwriters.

For Bangladesh, participation in such an international network could create opportunities to exchange knowledge about copyright administration, collective rights management and professional practices followed in other countries.

Ahmed’s involvement in the organisation also reflects his longstanding engagement with issues affecting music creators beyond his career as a performer.

He currently serves as the chief executive officer of the Bangladesh Lyricists, Composers and Performers Society (BLCPS), an organisation associated with the interests and rights of music professionals.

His election to APMA’s leadership could help establish closer communication between Bangladeshi music creators and regional organisations working on similar concerns.

Alongside his organisational responsibilities, Ahmed remains one of the most recognisable figures in Bangladesh’s band music scene.

His musical journey is closely associated with Miles, one of the country’s most influential bands. The group was formed in 1979 by Hamin Ahmed and Shafin Ahmed, with Farid Rashid playing a central role in its establishment.

Miles initially concentrated on English-language music and released two English albums before turning towards Bengali-language recordings.

The band’s first Bengali album, Protishruti, was released in 1991, opening a new chapter in its musical development. The album helped establish Miles among a wider Bengali-speaking audience, while the group’s popularity expanded considerably throughout the 1990s.

Over the years, Miles became known for its distinctive blend of rock arrangements, memorable melodies and emotionally resonant lyrics.

Songs such as Chand Tara Surjo, Prothom Premer Moto, Gunjon Shuni, Firiye Dao, Dhiki Dhiki, Pahari Meye, Neela and Piyasi Mon helped the band secure a lasting place in Bangladesh’s popular music culture.

Many of these recordings remain familiar to generations of listeners, reflecting the band’s enduring influence on the country’s modern music landscape.

Miles released its latest album, Protichhobi, in 2015, adding another chapter to a recording career spanning several decades.

Ahmed’s latest achievement comes after years of involvement in both musical performance and activities concerning the professional interests of creators.

While his reputation was established through Miles and its contribution to Bangladeshi rock music, his new international responsibility places him in a position to participate in wider discussions about the future of music creation and creators’ rights.

The appointment also highlights the growing importance of international cooperation in an industry where songs increasingly reach audiences beyond national borders.

For Bangladesh’s music community, Ahmed’s election represents an opportunity to strengthen regional engagement, share professional expertise and develop closer ties with organisations working to protect the rights and interests of music creators.
