Lalon’s Legacy Lives On as Shrine Festival Winds Down

The formal observances of the sadhus’ gathering marking the 136th death anniversary of mystic philosopher Fakir Lalon Shah have concluded at Lalon Akhra in Cheuriya, Kumarkhali, Kushtia. The rituals ended on Sunday afternoon with the traditional ceremony known as ‘Purnaseba’, after which sadhus, fakirs and Baul practitioners who had travelled from different parts of Bangladesh began leaving the shrine.

Although the formal gathering has ended, discussions on Lalon’s philosophy, cultural performances and a traditional fair beside the Kali River are scheduled to continue until late Monday night. Sadhus, fakirs and devotees are expected to return to the shrine for the Dol Purnima celebrations.

For two days, Lalon Akhra was alive with spiritual practices, service to spiritual mentors and the soulful melodies of Lalon’s songs. Practitioners gathered to exchange ideas and reflect on his philosophy of humanity, equality and communal harmony. Even after the formal conclusion of the gathering, small musical sessions continued at different spots around the shrine, with the sounds of the ektara and dotara filling the air.

The three-day festival began on Saturday with the ritual of ‘Adhibas Seba’. Organised by the Lalon Academy with support from the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and the district administration, the event attracted thousands of devotees, sadhus, fakirs, Baul singers and visitors from across the country. Their presence created a festive atmosphere throughout the shrine complex and along the banks of the Kali River.

At the opening ceremony on Saturday afternoon, Cultural Affairs Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury and Dr Zahed Ur Rahman, an adviser to the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and the Prime Minister’s information adviser, emphasised the importance of introducing Lalon’s philosophy to students and younger generations. They also highlighted the need to spread his messages of equality, humanity and secularism among people from all walks of life.

A discussion meeting was held on Sunday evening, with Khulna Divisional Commissioner Abdullah Harun attending as the chief guest. Writer and thinker Farhad Mazhar was among the other participants. The meeting was followed by a night of mystical music performed by various artists, keeping Lalon’s songs at the centre of the celebrations.

A gathering rooted in spiritual learning

At different locations around the akhra, small groups of sadhus and fakirs gathered for musical sessions and discussions. Accompanied by traditional instruments, they sang Lalon’s songs and exchanged views on the meaning of his teachings.

For many participants, the gathering is more than an annual festival. It offers an opportunity for spiritual reflection, self-discipline and learning about human nature. Some spend their time singing, while others take part in discussions, spiritual practices and service to their gurus. These activities also help preserve the Baul tradition and pass its teachings on to future generations.

Sadhu Abdur Razzak Sain said the formal gathering had ended at noon with Purnaseba, prompting visiting sadhus and fakirs to begin their journey home. They would reunite at the shrine during the Dol Purnima festival.

“This is a centre of learning. We come here to learn. The two annual gatherings become occasions for sadhus and fakirs to come together,” he said.

Sadhu Mansur Sain said Lalon’s teachings were shared through music, while discussions and exchanges of ideas among practitioners helped keep his philosophy alive. He described the gathering as an important platform for spreading Lalon’s message among people.

Traditional fair attracts crowds

Alongside the spiritual observances, a large traditional fair has been set up on the banks of the Kali River near the shrine. Traders have arranged stalls selling a variety of goods, attracting visitors from nearby areas and farther afield.

The fair has become a major attraction in its own right, with people browsing the stalls, shopping and enjoying the lively atmosphere. Although the formal sadhus’ gathering has concluded, the fair and cultural activities are expected to continue until late Monday night.

The combination of spiritual practices, music and traditional commerce has brought together people with different interests, adding to the wider cultural significance of the annual event.

Security tightened for visitors

The local administration has introduced special security arrangements to protect devotees, practitioners and visitors attending the festival. Surveillance has been strengthened to keep the fair free from drugs and maintain public order.

A total of 872 police personnel have been deployed for security duties. Special teams from the Ansar force and the SRB are also assisting with the arrangements.

The annual festival regularly draws visitors from across Bangladesh, offering an opportunity to experience Lalon’s music and explore the philosophical ideas that have shaped his enduring legacy.

Preserving Lalon’s message of humanity

Fakir Lalon Shah spent his final days at the shrine in Cheuriya, Kumarkhali. Since his death, his followers have continued to preserve his teachings and spiritual traditions through successive generations.

Lalon’s songs explore human identity, social divisions, equality and the search for spiritual truth. His philosophy encourages people to look beyond religious and social distinctions and recognise the value of humanity. These ideas remain an important part of Bangladesh’s folk music and spiritual heritage.

This year’s observances continued that tradition through rituals, musical performances and discussions of his life and philosophy. While the formal sadhus’ gathering has ended, the wider festival atmosphere will remain at the shrine until late Monday night.

The next major gathering is expected during Dol Purnima, when sadhus, fakirs, Baul singers and devotees will return to Lalon’s shrine to renew their spiritual fellowship and celebrate the mystic’s enduring message of equality and humanity.
