The era of cassette tapes and CDs may have faded, but the culture of full-length albums has not disappeared entirely from Bangladesh’s music scene. In the age of digital streaming, artists typically release songs individually on YouTube and audio platforms, allowing listeners to access new music almost instantly.

Yet a number of Bangladeshi musicians are returning to the album format, albeit in a form suited to the digital age. Alongside these releases, several established performers are also preparing or staging solo concerts, giving audiences opportunities to experience their music in a live setting.

Ferdous Ara returns to modern songs

Nazrul Sangeet exponent Ferdous Ara is preparing a new modern-song album after more than three decades. Provisionally titled Prem, the album will feature 10 songs, several of which have already been completed.

The project is not being planned solely as an audio release. Videos for each song are also expected to be produced and released individually. The songs will subsequently be made available in audio format, allowing listeners to experience the album across different digital platforms.

For an artist better known for Nazrul Sangeet, the project marks a notable return to modern Bengali songs after a lengthy gap.

Shuvo, Tarun and Lutfur return after a decade

Singer Kazi Shuvo is also making a comeback to the solo-album format after a 10-year gap. His last two solo albums, Mayar Agun and Daga, were released in 2016.

His new album, Keu Bujhlo Na, is scheduled for release on 28 September under the banner of Dhruba Music Station. It contains nine songs, including a duet featuring Kazi Shuvo and singer Badhan Sarker Puja.

Composer and singer Tarun Munshi is following a similar path. His new album, Naseeb, comes after a decade and contains seven songs. The tracks explore themes including love, separation and nature, alongside reflections on human life, mysticism and social issues. Recording for all the songs has recently been completed, with Dhruba Music Station set to release the album.

Lutfur Hasan, widely recognised for the song Ghuri Tumi Kar Akashe Oro, is also preparing a new solo album. His previous solo album was released around a decade ago. The title of the forthcoming project has yet to be finalised, but it will contain eight songs and become his eighth solo album.

Hasan has written and composed every song on the album, giving the project a distinctly personal character.

Shaan Sayek working on five-song album

Composer and singer Shaan Sayek is working on another new solo album containing five songs. The tracks have been written by Lutfur Hasan, Mahmud Murad, Walid Hasan and Shanto Pathik.

The title has not yet been finalised, but work on the album is already under way.

Joy Shahriar releases Boka

Singer Joy Shahriar has returned to the solo-album format with Boka, his fifth studio album. The eight-track project marks his first solo album in six years.

The first song from the album, Tomake Bhulte Shomoy Lagbe, was released last year. Three tracks have been released so far, while the remaining songs are scheduled to come out gradually.

The staggered release approach reflects the way albums are increasingly being presented to digital audiences, where individual tracks can reach listeners separately rather than arriving as a single package.

Rafa prepares for first solo concert

The live music calendar is also gaining momentum, with several musicians preparing solo performances.

Raief Al Hasan, better known as Rafa, is set to appear in his first solo concert. For more than two decades, he has been associated with singing, guitar and drums and has performed with several bands. He is particularly known for his work with Aurthohin and Cryptic Fate.

A few years ago, he formed his own band, AvoidRafa. The band’s first solo concert, titled Eto Boka Keno Tumi, will take place on 2 October at Hotel InterContinental in the capital.

The event will combine musical performances with personal reflections. Rafa is expected to share experiences from different stages of his musical career between performances. Aurthohin will appear as the guest band.

Bappa Majumder announces Moonlit Melodies

Singer Bappa Majumder, who regularly performs at concerts with bands, has comparatively rarely held solo musical evenings. His first solo concert was organised in 2022.

Two years later, in 2024, he marked three decades in music with the solo concert Bappa Majumder Odyssey at the Krishibid Institution auditorium. Last year, he also performed at a solo event at the Yamaha Music Lounge in Tejgaon.

After a year’s break, Bappa will return to the stage on 9 October at the Krishibid Institution auditorium. Titled Moonlit Melodies, the concert will feature some of his popular songs.

The recent run of solo performances has already included Miftah, who entertained audiences at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy on 25 September. The following day, Nirjhar Chowdhury held a solo concert at Alliance Française de Dhaka in Dhanmondi.

Taken together, the new albums and live events point to a renewed interest in formats that once dominated Bangladesh’s music industry. While digital platforms have changed how songs are produced, released and consumed, artists continue to find value in presenting a collection of songs as a complete body of work and in meeting audiences directly through live performances.
