Musician Rehan Rasul has teamed up with Australian-based expatriate physician and singer Rapti Sarwat to release an original Bengali track titled ‘Durotto’ (Distance). Penned and composed by Rasul himself, the single features sound design and musical arrangements by Tasnuv Nawal, merging two contrasting musical backgrounds into an expressive contemporary duet.

Rasul has steadily established an unmistakable identity across the contemporary Bengali music scene, widely recognised for his distinct vocal character, evocative melodies, and reflective lyricism. He first captured mainstream attention in 2018 with the breakout success of ‘Baje Shobhab’, quickly building a loyal following among modern music listeners. He followed up with a run of popular original singles, including ‘Rupkotha’, ‘Ochena Shohor’, ‘Onyorokom Khun’, and ‘Hi’. Beyond his independent discography, Rasul made an impression in playback singing with ‘Ashbe Amar Din’ from the blockbuster feature film ‘Toofan’, visualised on screen by Shakib Khan. His vocal contribution to ‘Mayapakhi’, the theme song for a well-received television drama, also drew widespread praise.

Sarwat brings an accomplished classical foundation alongside a demanding medical career to this creative project. Based in Brisbane, she works as a practising general practitioner and holds a fellowship with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners. Parallel to her work in healthcare, her involvement in formal musical training spans decades.

Her musical roots trace back to her childhood in Bangladesh, where she was an enlisted child artiste on Bangladesh Betar, performing Nazrul Sangeet, patriotic anthems, and traditional folk genres, before later earning accreditation on Bangladesh Television. She credits much of her artistic grounding to the late Ekushey Padak-winning maestro Sudhin Das, a revered archivist and exponent celebrated for preserving the authentic notations of Kazi Nazrul Islam’s work. Sarwat spent formative years training at ‘Agnibeena’, the academy established by Das, where systematic institutional instruction shaped her vocal discipline and technical accuracy.

Following an extended break from public performance after moving to Australia, Sarwat gradually resumed regular practice. She performs at regional cultural events and shares recordings on her YouTube channel, where her interpretations of classics like ‘Bimurto Ei Rati Amar’, ‘Khachar Bhitor Ochin Pakhi’, and ‘Eka Achi To Ki Hoyeche’ have built a dedicated listenership. ‘Durotto’ represents her formal debut as an original recording artiste, marking an important milestone in her creative journey.

Reflecting on the track, Rasul explained that the lyric represents a dialogue between authentic Bengali melody and the lived experiences of non-resident Bangladeshis living abroad. By balancing Rasul’s modern indie aesthetic with Sarwat’s classical poise, the duet offers a seamless fusion of heritage and contemporary style. ‘Durotto’ is slated for official digital release early next month on Sarwat’s YouTube channel.
