Subcontinental music legend Runa Laila captivated a packed auditorium at the National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in Dhaka during her solo musical evening, titled Shilpi Ami Tomaderi Gan Shonabo. Beyond delivering a mesmerising repertoire spanning her six-decade career, the iconic vocalist delighted the audience with a witty exchange with the host, renowned actor and director Afzal Hossain.

Toward the end of the performance, Runa Laila invited Afzal Hossain onto the stage to express her gratitude for his presence despite his demanding schedule. As she shook his hand, she shared a humorous revelation that drew roaring laughter from the 700-strong crowd.

Let me tell you the reason—these diamond rings on my fingers, what if someone suddenly slides them off? But he [Afzal Hossain] is completely safe.”

A Collection Born of Childhood Memories

The singer’s collection of diamond rings has long sparked curiosity among fans and concertgoers alike. Her affinity for the precious gems began at the age of 15 in Karachi, when her mother, Amina Laila, presented her with her very first diamond ring. Over her professional career, Runa Laila continuously built upon that sentimental beginning, handpicking unique pieces that have become a trademark visual element during her stage appearances.

The humorously guarded gesture served as a prelude to a moment of reflection from Afzal Hossain, who shared a memory dating back four decades to his early days at Bangladesh Television (BTV).

Afzal Hossain, Actor and Director: “I believe that the wonders of our lives have gradually faded, yet there are a few individuals who remain absolute wonders to this day. When I had just started acting, I was walking down the stairs from the second floor after a rehearsal as Runa Laila emerged from the studio. She did not notice me, but I watched her from afar. My head was spinning so much that I had to hold onto the railing. We have witnessed many forms of stardom; over time, the lustre fades for most. However, Runa Laila has preserved her extraordinary presence. She remains a true star in the sky, shining just as brightly today as she did forty years ago.”

Sold-Out Performance Honours a Timeless Legacy

Public anticipation for the solo concert was immense, with organisers confirming that every seat in the 700-capacity National Theatre Hall was claimed on the very first day of ticket sales.

Taking the stage shortly after 7:30 pm, Runa Laila opened the evening with the patriotic anthem Desher Jonyo Jára. Her setlist seamlessly wove through generations of musical history, featuring beloved classics such as Shilpi Ami, Jokhon Thambe Kolahol, Ganer-i Khatay, Je Jon Premer Bhab Jane Na, Amay Gethe Dao Na, Bondu Tin Din, Anek Brishti Jhore, and Sadher Lau.

In a milestone for her live performances, the veteran artist also rendered the Nazrul Sangeet composition Bhulite Pari Na on stage for the first time. Responding to enthusiastic demands from an enraptured crowd, she closed the memorable evening with her rendition of Dama Dam Mast Qalandar, leaving the hall echoing with applause.
