Shanghai’s renowned live music venue, The Pearl, famed for its eclectic cultural events, cabaret-style productions, and performances by international artists, is set to host Bangladeshi singer and composer Armeen Musa on 26 March. Musa has already arrived in the city to prepare for the much-anticipated event.
The concert will begin with a solo piano performance by Armeen Musa, showcasing her original compositions. She will then join forces with The Pearl Red Stars band for a collaborative segment. A special tribute to the legendary Bangladeshi folk singer and composer Abbasuddin Ahmed will also be featured, highlighting Musa’s effort to honour the country’s musical heritage.
Speaking ahead of the performance, Armeen Musa said, “I will perform some of my original songs in both English and Bengali. One of the pieces will be a tribute to Abbasuddin Ahmed. Presenting this to an international audience is very exciting for me.”
Musa brings extensive global experience, having performed in the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia, Malta, and India. China marks a new addition to her growing list of international venues. She deliberately selects stages where she can connect with audiences from diverse cultural backgrounds, emphasising cross-cultural engagement through music.
This performance carries personal significance as well. Armeen’s grandmother, the celebrated singer Ferdousi Rahman, toured China in 1966 and performed multiple Bengali songs during her visit. She later documented the experience in her book Gaan Geye Elam Chine (“I Came to China Singing”). For Armeen, singing in Shanghai continues that legacy, blending family history with contemporary artistry.
Armeen Musa is internationally recognised for her fusion of Bengali music with contemporary styles and is Bangladesh’s first Grammy-nominated composer. In a recent interview with That’s Shanghai magazine, her efforts to promote Bengali music on the global stage were widely praised.
