Singer John Kabir Ventures into Filmmaking

John Kabir, widely recognised as the lead vocalist of the renowned Black Band, has long been celebrated for his musical contributions. Over the years, he has also dabbled in acting, though without consistent engagement. During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Kabir explored a new avenue as a host, creating podcasts that soon became the centre of public conversation. Now, he has stepped into an entirely new creative realm: filmmaking. His short film, American Dream, marks his directorial debut.

Residing permanently in the United States for several years, Kabir directed this short film abroad. The first episode, spanning just two and a half minutes, features a solo performance by actor Zayed Khan, who has also been living in the United States for nearly three years. The narrative focuses on the struggles of life as an expatriate, capturing the nuanced hardships of adapting to a foreign land while striving to support family back home.

A photograph recently circulated on social media showed Zayed Khan moving wooden planks along a New York street, prompting speculation that he might be working as a labourer. The truth was later revealed: the image was a scene from American Dream. In the film, Khan portrays a construction worker who labours through the week and even on his days off to provide for his family. Concerned about causing worry, he fabricates tales of well-being to his loved ones back home.

Despite earlier criticism of Khan’s acting, American Dream has been praised for its poignant portrayal of the expatriate experience. Following its premiere last Friday at 7 PM Bangladesh time on the YouTube channel and Facebook page of the US-based media outlet Thikana, both the actor and the film have received widespread acclaim.

Although this is Kabir’s first venture into filmmaking, he initially chose to remain anonymous, adopting the pseudonym “JK” in his credits. However, once the short film gained attention, public curiosity quickly revealed his identity. Sharing a video posted by Sad Al Amin, a student in the Film and Media Department in the United States, Kabir remarked, “I wanted to stay hidden. But how long could I?” On his own social media, he confirmed, “The cat is out of the bag. I am JK, the filmmaker.”
