Pop superstar Miley Cyrus has revealed that her attendance at the 2025 Oscars was motivated by more than just glamour: she went to pitch herself as a songwriter for film.
Cyrus, who has recently been involved in several high-profile cinematic soundtracks, shared that she proactively approaches filmmakers rather than waiting for opportunities to come to her. Earlier this month, she released Dream As One, a song for Avatar: Fire And Ash, the latest instalment in James Cameron’s celebrated sci-fi franchise. Prior to this, she wrote Beautiful That Way for The Last Showgirl, starring Pamela Anderson.
Speaking to People, Cyrus explained how these collaborations came about. At the 2024 D23 Expo, where she and Cameron were both honoured as Disney Legends, she approached him about contributing music. “I kind of throw it out there as I always do,” she said. “I already knew the answer to, ‘So what have you been up to?’ I know he’s been up to Avatar for a very long time. I just said, ‘Let me know if you ever need any music.’ And it just kind of organically happened.” She added that Cameron affectionately refers to honourees as “Legends in law.”
Cyrus employed a similar approach with Jamie Lee Curtis, leading to her involvement with The Last Showgirl. She further revealed that she extended the same offer at the Oscars this year, telling anyone who approached her: “Well, if you need any music, I’m around.” She even pitched ideas for a potential second season of the Netflix series Baby Reindeer, despite no official confirmation of its continuation.
Dream As One, co-written with Andrew Wyatt, Mark Ronson, and Simon Franglen, plays over the end credits of the third Avatar film and was inspired in part by the devastating Los Angeles wildfires earlier this year.
Cyrus continues to build her musical legacy alongside her cinematic ambitions. Her ninth studio album, Something Beautiful, released last May, received a four-star review from NME, which praised its “fully realised artistic statement” and post-genre approach. The album features Secrets, a collaboration with Fleetwood Mac members Mick Fleetwood and Lindsey Buckingham, which Cyrus dedicated to her father, Billy Ray Cyrus.
| Year | Song | Film/Project | Collaborators |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 | Beautiful That Way | The Last Showgirl | N/A |
| 2025 | Dream As One | Avatar: Fire And Ash | Andrew Wyatt, Mark Ronson, Simon Franglen |
| 2025 | Secrets | Something Beautiful (Album) | Mick Fleetwood, Lindsey Buckingham |
Cyrus’s proactive approach highlights her determination to expand her career beyond pop stardom into the realm of cinematic music, demonstrating both ambition and versatility.
