Diplo, the well-known music producer, has playfully claimed that he once dated Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, amid his ex Katy Perry’s new romance with the politician.
The producer, who briefly dated Perry in 2014, recently made light-hearted comments about her current relationship with Trudeau. Rumours about the two began circulating earlier this year, and last month, the Daily Mail published photos of Perry and Trudeau embracing and kissing on the upper deck of a yacht. Last week, the pair confirmed their romance with a public appearance together in Paris.
In an interview on the Smart Girls Dumb Questions podcast last month, Diplo made a cheeky remark regarding Perry’s relationship with the former Canadian Prime Minister, joking that he had dated Trudeau first. Host Nayeema Raza had been discussing how many people she knew who had dated the Canadian politician, prompting Diplo to interrupt with: “… who’ve dated Katy Perry? Like me?”
He continued, “Now, Katy Perry’s dating Justin Trudeau… Pretty fire,” before adding with a laugh, “I dated Trudeau, too.”
The DJ went on to quip, “That was a weird one, though. I’m just not into politicians. He is kinda hot.”
Since making the joke, Diplo has continued to joke about the light-hearted claim on social media. On Monday, November 3, he shared a selfie with Trudeau, taken at what appears to be a crowded music event. In the photo, the politician is seen looking directly into the camera while Diplo pulls a silly face.
Captioning the image, Diplo wrote: “The one that got away” — a playful reference to both a supposed love triangle and to Perry’s 2011 hit single of the same name.
