The worsening flood crisis across Bangladesh has compelled organisers to postpone a major national gala planned to honour the legendary playback singer Runa Laila. Initially slated for 18 July at the National Theatre Hall auditorium of the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, the grand ceremony has been suspended. Both the iconic vocalist and the state-run cultural academy confirmed the deferral, pointing to the severe environmental emergency currently impacting millions across the nation.

Speaking to the media, Runa Laila expressed her deep sympathy for those affected by the deluge, noting that hosting a celebratory event amidst such widespread distress would be inappropriate. Sabina Yasmin, the academy’s public relations officer, confirmed that organisers are closely monitoring the situation. Should conditions improve, the academy tentatively aims to host the tribute on 25 July, though any final decision remains strictly dependent on the pace of recovery in the flood-hit districts.

Tight Schedule Ahead of Australian Tour

The postponement presents organisers with an exceptionally narrow window to reschedule the event. Runa Laila is due to depart for Australia on 29 July, accompanied by her troupe of instrumentalists, for a highly anticipated concert tour.

This tour marks her first musical appearances in Australia in nearly a decade, featuring key performances in:

• Sydney: 1 August

• Melbourne: 8 August

Shilpakala Academy officials remain keen to stage the tribute before her departure at the end of the month. However, they have reiterated that public safety and national flood relief efforts are the absolute priorities, meaning any rescheduled date will remain highly flexible.

A Historic Solo Performance on Hold

The delayed ceremony holds immense historical significance for the country’s cultural landscape. Despite an illustrious career spanning more than six decades, this gala will mark Runa Laila’s first-ever solo performance at the Shilpakala Academy.

The curated programme is designed as an intimate evening of music and narrative. The songstress is set to perform some of her most iconic classics, whilst contemporaries, close colleagues, and distinguished guests will share personal recollections of her journey. Runa Laila herself highlighted the importance of the event, stating that documenting these musical milestones is essential for passing the nation’s rich cultural heritage down to younger generations.

Honouring National Cultural Treasures

The tribute forms part of an ongoing state-sponsored initiative launched last year by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, in collaboration with the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy. The programme is designed to celebrate the lifetimes of the nation’s most influential cultural pioneers whilst they remain active.

The series commenced last September with a tribute to the revered singer Sabina Yasmin, followed most recently by a grand ceremony for the veteran vocalist Syed Abdul Hadi in June. Runa Laila’s selection as the third recipient of this state honour underlines her peerless status as a true pioneer of South Asian music.
