Amaal Mallik Steps Back From Film Music for Recovery

Bollywood singer and music composer Amaal Mallik has announced a temporary break from creating music for films, saying he needs to focus on his physical and mental well-being. The 36-year-old musician said he will not take on new film music projects until next year as he gives himself time to recover and regain a sense of balance.

Mallik shared the decision in a social media post on 27 August. Explaining his reasons, he said his immediate priority was to pay attention to his mind, body and overall peace of mind. Rather than continuing with new professional commitments, he wants to take a step back and return to music only when he feels fully ready.

The announcement marks a pause in an active phase of Mallik’s career, during which he has worked as a composer, singer and music director in the Hindi film industry. His work has included both composing music for films and lending his voice to songs, helping him establish a distinct identity among contemporary Bollywood musicians.

While Mallik is stepping away from new film projects, some of his earlier work could still reach audiences in the coming period. He said a number of older and previously unreleased film songs may be released soon. Their release dates, however, remain uncertain because they are linked to the release plans of the respective films.

According to Mallik, some of these films have been made on relatively modest budgets and may not receive extensive theatrical releases. That could affect when the associated music is made available to listeners. As a result, he is unable to give a firm timeline for when all of his unreleased songs will eventually reach the public.

The musician has also asked fans and well-wishers to give him some time and avoid repeatedly asking about his next professional move. He said that once he has recovered and is ready to return, he will announce his plans himself.

Mallik’s decision comes with a clear indication that his break is not intended as a permanent departure from music. In his message, he suggested that his recent professional journey had taken him further into the world of cinema, but he now wants to reconnect with music itself. The pause, therefore, appears to be a period for recovery as well as reflection on the direction he wants to take with his work.

His reference to returning with renewed energy also suggests that he intends to resume his creative career after the break. However, he has not disclosed specific projects, collaborators or a detailed timetable for his return.

Mallik also shared a photograph from a hospital on social media, in which he could be seen lying on a hospital bed. He has not publicly disclosed details of any serious illness or provided a specific medical diagnosis. His comments have instead centred on the need to look after his physical health alongside his mental well-being and broader recovery.

For an artist whose professional work depends heavily on creativity, taking time away from new commitments can provide an opportunity to reassess priorities without closing the door on future projects. Mallik’s message reflects that approach: for now, he is choosing recovery over a packed schedule and asking his audience to respect that decision.

His existing work may continue to surface while he remains away from new film assignments, but his immediate focus is clear. Mallik wants to regain his health and return to music on his own terms.

He has indicated that he expects to resume work on new film music next year. Beyond that broad timeframe, there is currently no confirmed information about when exactly he will return or what his next musical project will be. For the moment, the singer-composer has asked his audience for patience while he takes the time he believes he needs.
